Hey guys,

Why is it so many people think you need a 45 minute "sermon" in order to feel fed? Are not discussions, mini- messages, encouragement to our people to hear from God for themselves enough? Should we go back to the old paradigm and start expository preaching again?

What are other methods to reach out to our people with food for the soul?

Peter,

You don't know me. I am currently attending Newsong Irvine. I'm not theologically trained. However, I'd like to join this discussion.

I'm not sure if the "sermon" is supposed to be a place of feeling fed. It is a time for me to come before God and worship Him. From my personal experience, I have felt that having regular times of ready the bible and prayer during the week with reinforcement at sunday service is the best. Generally, when I read the bible and pray regularly, the sunday service message comes alive to me. On the other hand, when I am not reading the bible on a regular basis, sunday service isn't lively to me. Surprise.

To answer the question, i think that other methods of reaching out to people would include encouraging them to meet God personally, alone during the week. I think that sunday services are great for worshiping with other christians.

James,

Thanks for joining in, by all means! And I love what you say...if the fire isn't burning during the week, and then all of a sudden you try to put a match to the thin stream of gas... nothing. Even with all the gas in the world flowin on your sunday morning suit jacket, the preacher ain't gonna kick start a fire, if it does happen, look out! Singed to the core! After you get burned to a crisp, then waht? Then die right down to a flicker again right? So true, as you remind us, for Christians to honestly look how they feed themselves. I always say 40 year olds should stop looking for the "deeper" preachers and become a feeder of others. Thanks! I will encourage our people in this regard too.
